Riding the Beach

I don’t think there is a better way to decompress than to spend the day riding the beach insanediego!

I like to start at Point Medanos, at the jetty in south Mission Beach. Plenty of parking, picnic tables, Mission Beach Basketball court and lots of beach volleyball. I unload my Townie Electra beach cruiser out of my truck, grab a bottle of water and then I head north on the board walk. The sand volleyball courts are always busy with people of all ages vying for the win. As I head north, I pass some of the best beach views around. My first stop is Belmont park, it was built back in the 1925 and is a historic amusement park located on Ocean Front at Surfrider Square. Back in the early 1970’s when I was in high school, we used to come down here and hang out till all hours of the evening. I loved riding the Giant Dipper roller coaster an iconic wooden roller coaster. Fun days back then, today the park is much smaller but still a fun place to hang out. As I head north on the board walk from Belmont Park, I head for Pacific beach with its surf shops, the Christal Pier and great places to eat. One of my favorite eateries is “Kono’s Surf Club Café”, it’s right at the foot of the Christal Pier. They also have a great coffee kiosk on the board walk. Bring your appetite because they fill the plates with great surfer meals. When my wife and I come here we usually split a plate because its enough. This is a hangout of all the local surfers who have finished there morning rides. After breakfast you can take a stroll out onto the Christal pier and watch the surfers cutting through the waves. As I head farther north, I pass some great places to stay and more great restaurants, after a bit the boardwalk ends and I take to the streets heading north to La Jolla. While traveling to La Jolla you go through small beach neighborhoods that have beautiful small surfer beaches because the surf along this stretch is fantastic. Pulling into La Jolla brings you to some of insanediegos most coveted property, high end shops great restaurants and beautiful ocean views. You can rent a kayak and explore the ocean cave or swim the cove and check out the seals that call this area home.

After hanging out for a while I turn south for my trip back to my truck at Point Medanos, the trip south is as amazing as the trip coming north.

Just another ho hum day.
